What to bring on your first boat trip in Costa Rica

A boat trip is one of those experiences you remember for years. So you only remember the good parts, here's the list we use every time we head out to sea.

Must-haves for your bag

  • Sunscreen. At sea the sun hits twice as hard because it reflects off the water. Apply it before boarding and reapply every two hours.
  • A cap or hat and sunglasses. Ideally a hat you can tie down: it gets windy on the boat.
  • Water. Even if the trip includes drinks, bring your own bottle.
  • A towel and a change of dry clothes for the ride back.
  • A dry bag or waterproof case for your phone and documents.

What to wear

Wear your swimsuit from home, a light long-sleeve shirt for sun protection, and sandals that can get wet. Leave jewelry and anything you don't want to lose to the sea at home.

How to avoid seasickness

  • Eat a light breakfast: not on an empty stomach, but not too full either.
  • If you get seasick easily, take your motion sickness pill before boarding, not once you already feel sick.
  • Sit at the back of the boat, where it moves less, and look at the horizon.
  • The sea is usually calmer in the mornings, especially in the rainy season.

Before you leave, ask the captain

  • Where the life jackets are and whether there are kids' sizes.
  • How long the trip lasts and what time you'll be back.
  • Whether you can go snorkeling or stop at a beach.

At Vamos en Lancha we visit every boat before listing it and check that it has life jackets for adults and kids, so you can relax from the very first minute. Already know which beach you want to visit? Find your boat here.
